Progress on a Joint Strategy to Address Climate Change in Balochistan

A key meeting was held in Quetta between Chief Minister of Balochistan Mir Sarfraz Bugti and the Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam, to discuss the environmental challenges facing the province and to deliberate on coordinated measures to address them. The discussion emphasized that climate change has become a serious issue for the country, particularly for Balochistan, where its impacts are intensifying with time.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister highlighted that Balochistan is facing multiple climate-related threats, including droughts, floods, and rising temperatures. He stated that the provincial government is actively working on a comprehensive and long-term strategy to tackle these challenges. He further shared that the province has established its first Climate Fund to effectively support environmental initiatives and ensure sustainable implementation of climate-related projects. He pointed out that although Balochistan contributes minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, it is among the regions most severely affected, which calls for greater attention and resource allocation.
Both sides agreed to further strengthen coordination between the federal and provincial governments on environmental matters. Romina Khurshid Alam reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to working closely with Balochistan to confront climate challenges, ensuring cooperation at both policy and implementation levels. She appreciated the steps taken by the provincial government and acknowledged the leadership role played by the Chief Minister in advancing environmental initiatives.
It was also underscored that women and marginalized communities have been included in climate policy planning to promote inclusive and equitable development. The participants reiterated their resolve to adopt integrated policies, effective planning, and inter-institutional collaboration to safeguard Balochistan from environmental risks and climate-related disasters.
